If your phone is damaged by water, you had probably assumed that you can use your phone in whatever environment, without worrying about damage. Most of the big manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, have at least one device in their range that is specified as waterproof.
Some specialists suggest that the best term to use here is water resistant. In the lay mans; lets say you accidentally drop your phone in a glass of water, how long would it stay there before its completely beyond recovery.
How Waterproofing Works on Mobiles
The degree of water resistance depends on the IP rating that the phone has. In fact, many electronic devices have different ratings to show the level of water and dust resitantance they offer.
Manufacturers decided to compromise to ratings like IP67. The first digit after IP refers to the dust resistance that the device has (6). The second digit determines its resistance to water (9).
So a phone rated IP67 is essentially sealed against dust. But it only scores 7 out of 9 for water ingress. So if this phone is marketed as being “waterproof”, it’s actually water resistant.
So the IP67 rated phone can cope with splashes of water(like raining or snowing) while you take a call.
Warranties on Waterproof Phones
Most manufacturers do not cover water damage even when they initially launched the phone splashy advert with a model swiminng with the phone. To be covered
for any sort of damage its best you take out insurance for your handset.
